  • Dragons Den Challenge

Wed 18 May 2016 Miss Hendry

On Tuesday the children were set a special challenge to design and pitch their very own invention for our school. The winning team in each class will be facing a panel in a special Dragons Den assembly on Friday. They have been creating some fantastic and innovative ideas and I can't wait to see the winning inventions at the end of the week! Read below to find out more about the task they have been set.

  • New Build Memorial Arrives

    Tue 17 May 2016

After nine months of relentless efforts, the children have finally managed to secure a lasting and appropriate memorial to James Brindley Nicolson VC. James was awarded the Victoria Cross for an action that took place over the City of Southampton during the Battle of Britain. James’ VC was only the second ever awarded for an action over British soil and the only VC awarded for an action during the Battle of Britain. The children believed that not enough had been done to remember this important moment in Southampton’s history and they were determined to do something about it.

The children have led this project, presenting our intentions to MPs at the Houses of Parliament, consulting with the school governing body and even designing the stone itself. We are extremely proud of our children. Their efforts will leave a legacy for all children and parents who come to the school in the future and will rightfully remember James Nicolson and all the pilots who so bravely defended Southampton during the Battle of Britain.

Last week the stone arrived. It looks absolutely brilliant! Well done to all.

  • Launch of Inventions Week

Mon 16 May 2016 Miss Hendry

Today was the launch of our Inventions Week. All the children came into school dressed as scientists or inventions. They looked absolutely fantastic - we had lots of mad professors and even a life size phone! We can't forget the adults though. Mr Langston was Albert Einstein for the day and Mrs Jewell was a science workman.

All children were very excited to meet our special visitor Ian B Dunne who is a local scientist. He came to inspire us using some wacky inventions and incredible scientific discoveries. Everyone gathered for a whole school assembly and then each year group got the opportunity to attend a workshop with Ian to extend their knowledge and excitement. It was a great day and the perfect way to inspire our inventors for the week ahead.

  • Well done Year 6!

    Fri 13 May 2016

This week the Year 6 children completed the new National Curriculum Assessment tests (SATs) in Reading, Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling and Mathematics.  The standards of these new assessments were certainly challenging yet the children's attitudes and efforts were exceptional and unrelenting throughout.  They continue to work incredibly hard and we are very proud of them all.

We hope all Year 6 children can relax this weekend and return refreshed on Monday for their exciting remaining weeks at Sholing Junior School.
